Benjamin de Rothschild is happy baron. His two trimarans have just
finished second and fourth in the Transat Jacques Vabre. He sat for a rare
interview with Pierre-Antoine Preti for the Tribune de Geneve:
It was your father, Edmond de Rothschild, who started you in sailing...
"I learned to sail before walking, on my father's Gitana V. I like the
environment of the ports, of the crews. From IV to VII I knew all the
Gitana yachts.
Why have you chosen to focus on multihulls?
"The first boat I sailed on solo was a Hobie Cat. I then bought a 40 foot
catamaran. When one has tasted 35 knots on a trimaran, it's difficult to
go back to 15-20 knots on a monohull.
In July you publicly spoke out against the organisers of the ORMA
Championship..
" The formula needs to be changed. The ORMA Championship is badly
organised. The cities are selected at the last minute, based on what they
pay to the organiser! Ten days before the start of some events, one does
not know who will show up. The partners and the media are not well served
by this.
You asked people to reflect on a new Championship. What is your project?
" These splendid boats need to be more visible. The passion of the crowds
at the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre speaks volumes. The sponsors and
the crews adore that. The participation of oceanic multihulls in events
such as the Giraglia and the Fastnet needs to be considered. I like the
idea of an around the world race, crewed, and in stages. My concept is one
of an equatorial route: we would pass through Panama, China and the West
Coast of the United States. Grand Prix races could be organised at each
stage.
What is required?
This is a turn-key projecct. I already have a sponsor, but I will not
advance his name as long as I am unsure of all the functions. All that
will be discussed in the halls of the Salon Nautique in Paris from 3 to 12
December.
