"Sailrocket" warming up for Speed Week
The Sailrocket project is set to hit the water again for Weymouth speed
week between the 8th to the 14th of October in an effort to climb ever
closer to its ultimate goal to be the fastest yacht on the planet.
With only a couple of days sailing posted since last year, we have been
busy working in order to fund*(see below) the future of the project whilst
developing the next exciting stage, the construction of the solid wing
sail. This will provide a substantial increase in performance.
The solid wing is a very tricky piece of kit to design and build. It has
to be extremely well thought out in order to both perform and survive the
rigours of a speed sailing program. This 'sail' needs to hold optimum
shape in apparent wind strengths of over 50 knots. It will have around a
ton of load upon it and yet it must be very light. It must be easy to
handle on the land and on the water. It will have flaps to control the
centre of effort and it needs to be used on either port or starboard tack.
It must be robust to handle bumps and knocks without compromising
strength.
In terms of overall project progression, we are along way down the track.
In outright speed sailing terms, at 31 knots we are just beginning to
walk. The addition of the solid wing sail should take us the rest of the
way. If we didn't think we could do it, we wouldn't be doing it.
Meanwhile the Sailrocket project continues to look for suitable REAL title
sponsors. Don't wait until after we've done it, because we'll get cocky
and charge more. It's the way of the world. -- Paul Larsen

Grand Prix Cap L'Orient
1. Franck Cammas - Groupama-2 (1+2+1+1+1+3+2+3) 17 points
2. Pascal Bidégorry - Banque Populaire (2+3+2+2+2+2+1+5+1) 20 points
3. Frédéric Le Peutrec - Gitana 11 (4+1+4+4+4+1+2+1+4) 25 points
4. Armel Le Cléac'h - Foncia (3+4+3+5+5+4+6+4+2) 36 points
5. Michel Desjoyeaux - Géant (6+5+5+3+3+7+4+3+5) 41 points
6. Thierry Duprey du Vorsent - Gitana X (5+6+6+6+6+5+5+6+6) 51 points
GROUPAMA 3 - HALFWAY THERE
The construction of Groupama 3 got underway at the Multiplast yard some
nine months ago. Groupama 3, is the 6th maxi-multihull nearly 100 feet (30
m) long to have been built by the yard since the year 2000. At the time of
writing, mid-September 2005, the yard is halfway through the maxi-multi
build process, the assembly of the main hull and forebeam being scheduled
for the end of October.
But in order to get to the assembly stage, which will make the true scale
of the multihull apparent - her beam of 75 feet (22,60 m) making her the
widest trimaran in the world - a number of stages have been successfully
completed by the Multiplast prototypists. The yard has made the pre-forms,
the moulds, draped and oven-cured the 2 central half-hulls and fitted the
bulkheads. Construction of the moulds and floats, fore- and aft beams were
also started up, together with the digital milling of the dagger board
form.
Groupama 3 is the second maxi-trimaran to be built by Multiplast. Project
Manager for Groupama 3, Yann Penfornis : "The first maxi- trimaran we
built was the Van Peteghem / Lauriot-Prévost design, Geronimo. She was in
the process of being built when the starting shot for The Race was given
in 2001. Since then, the number of circumnavigations undertaken by
maxi-multihulls has multiplied. The Jules Verne Trophy has been beaten
three times. Once by Orange II, current holder of the record in a time of
50days, 16 hours, 20 minutes and 4 seconds, a boat designed by the Gilles
Ollier Design Team and built by Multiplast."
Groupama 3:
Length : 31,50 m
Width : 22,50 m
Mast: 41 m
Sailarea : 1000 m2
Draft : 5 m
Weight : 18 t

ASC /Arniser Segel Club (schöne Luftbilder vom Hafen).
