Russian/Swedish trimaran won first race in Oops Cup
Steve Ravussin, skipper on the Russian/Swedish trimaran Stena Sovcomflot,
won the first race in Nokia Oops Cup in Helsinki this Sunday. The Swiss
skipper where over the starting line too early in two of the four races,
but still managed to win the first regatta in Nokia Oops Cup 2005.
The condition right outside the beautiful Finnish capital was very light
this Sunday, but the six 60 foot trimarans did not disappoint the
spectators who had gathered too watch. As soon as the sea breeze kicked in
the fight for the best starting positions could begin. The starts were
aggressive and the temperature high on the race course this Sunday.
HiQ sailing team won the first regatta 200 metres in front of Knut
Frostads Team Academy. The Swedish team with Klas "Klabbe" Nylöf as
skipper has brought in Loick Peyron as co-skipper for the season. His
brother Bruno Peyron will join the cup when they reach Gothenburg in the
beginning of June. Bruno Peyron will be competing against his brother on
Stena Sovcomflot together with Roger Nilson and Steve Ravussin.
In the second race in Helsinki Stena Sovcomflot Sailing and Team Nokia,
with Magnus Olsson as skipper, got squeezed in the start and crossed the
starting line before the gun went off, forcing them to turn back and
restart. Stena Sovcomflot turned back, but Team Nokia didn't and got a DSQ
for that. Stena Sovcomflot started to chase the fleet and finally took the
gun half a boat length before HiQ.
In the following two races Stena Sovcomflot took second and third, and won
with equal points on HiQ. The Russian/Swedish won Saturdays Speed Race and
that win secured them this Sunday trophy.
The last start in Helsinki brought on much drama when Knut Frostad on
Academy and Tomas Johanson on TietoEnator crashed into each other. Academy
hit the Finnish boat on their port side and immediately pulled out of the
race. Johanson raced on, but had to head for the harbour when they started
to take in water shortly after the incident. The damage on Academy was not
serious, bit TietoEnator has substantial damage and will be hauled out of
the water today to start repairs.
The next race in Nokia Oops Cup is Stockholm City Race May 28.-29., and
both teams have some long nights with repairs in front of them. -- Jon

NORDIC TRIMARAN CIRCUS KICKS OFF
Nokia Oops Cup kicks of this weekend and the competition and boats are
hotter than ever. Knut Frostad and his Team Academy must fight hard to
keep their trophy from last year.
The Nordic trimaran circus starts in Helsinki in May 21th with Speed Races
just outside the Finnish capital. There will be five high pitched trimaran
60s on the starting line this year.
Knut Fostad won last year's event by pinning nine of ten races. That was a
bit of a shocker for all the more established teams in Nokia Oops Cup, and
this year they will be back with a vengeance.
It's not realistic to repeat last years results this time. All the teams
have more experience and we now have the oldest boat of them all. Academy
is 8-10 years older than most of the other trimarans and we must realise
that we are on the bottom of the speed hierarchy in Nokia Oops Cup this
time, says Knut Frostad.
After Helsinki the five boats will start their tour of the Nordic
countries - Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, and Copenhagen to finally end up
in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July. The racing will be intense in the
inshore regattas and the teams will be going after the speed records in
Helly Hansen Faerder Race, Sjaelland Rundt and Gotland Rundt. -- Jon

DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU SEE 8 PDQ POWERCATS cruising down the NY Canal System next week. That's because they're on their way home on our 3rd Annual Spring Flotilla. Many will travel as far south as Florida, while others will find their home ports in Annapolis.
Four other PDQs will travel East through the 1000 Islands and into Lake Champlain and the Hudson River.
Before all 14 boats leave for Cobourg on Wednesday, May 18th, all new owners will participate in PDQ U - a 2-day boat orientation program. Be sure to check in with us as we cruise along North America's northern canals.

Cats Race Around The IJsselmeer
Saturday May 8th at 10 o'clock 15 cruising catamarans and trimarans
started for the 50nm endurance race around the Ijsselmeer, Netherlands, 15
minutes later followed by 65 open cats. First leg was to Den Oever after
which the boats could bear away to Makkum, then due south to Stavoren,
south west to Enkhuizen and north west to Medemblik.
Between Makkum and Stavoren the windspeed increased to more than 25 knots
and with heavy rainfall and extremely low temperatures many crews decided
to abandon the race and head for shore. These boats were later recovered
by car and trailer. Only 17 of the 65 open cats completed the race.
Fastest around the course were Carolijn Brouwer and Sebbe Godefroid on a
Tornado who needed 3 hours and 36 minutes. Winners on corrected time
(Texel Yardstick) were Mischa Heemskerk and Sander de Boer (F18), Carolijn
and Sebbe 2nd, Wouter Samama and Jeroen van Leeuwen on a Tornado came 3rd
and Hans Bouscholte and Ruurd van Wieren were 4th, also on a Tornado.
