• Ich habe alle Bootsfenster auf meinem Wharram Tiki 38 mit Carosseriedichtband (Butyl) abgedichtet. Wie im ersten Beitrag beschrieben,bleibt die Masse formbar. Mein Boot ist seit 2009 unterwegs,im Mittelmeer und in der Karibik, die Fenster sind bis heute dicht. In den tropischen Gewässern hat sich das Butylband noch mehr ausgedehnt, heisst ist hervorgequollen... wen das stört kann die Masse einfach abschneiden. Das Gute an dieser Methode ist das es absolut kein Geschmier gibt, das Band kommt ab der Rolle und lässt sich sehr bequem aufbringen. Der Nachteil ist, dass die hervorquellende Masse nicht weggewischt werden kann,mann muss sie abschneiden.

• Vor ca einem Jahr habe ich mir von der Fa. Schiffsfenster nach Mass in 31737 Rinteln, Dieselstr. 9, Tel 05751-958810 für meinen Catalac 9m neue Fenster machen lassen, mit Alu-Klemmrahmen mit Dichtband. Erste Qualität, die Fenster sind dicht, auch nach einem Sintflut artigen Wolkenbruch in Griechenland. Der Preis war ok, auch die Liefer-zeit. Die Fenster sind problemlos selbst einzubauen, eigene Erfahrung Kann ich nur empfehlen. - Michael Eckardt -

  Hier ein Tip der noch nicht an Fenstern getestet ist. Vakuumdichtband ist ein Teufels- zeug. Ist sehr klebefreudig, bleibt sehr lange geschmeidig und läßt sich bei Bedarf "nachkneten". Habe als Kind im Vorschiff geschlafen, wo die Verschraubungen zum Deck damit abgedichtet waren. War immer trocken und Jahrelang in der selben Beschaffenheit. Habe regelmäßig kleine Figuren darauß geknetet und danach wieder an die Schrauben zurückgedrückt.

  Zur Zeit bin ich dabei meinen BOB 8 mit neuen Scheiben zu bestücken. Nun habe ich den Artikel über den Versuch der Fensterabdichtung gelesen und muß noch etwas dazu beitragen.
  Das Abdichten mit Sika oder dem Produkt von Fa. Würth funktioniert sehr gut. Gehe ich davon aus, dass die Scheiben auf den Aufbau aufgesetzt werden ist es zwingend notwendig nachdem ich die Scheiben vorbereitet und die Schutzfolie auf dem Macrolon oder Plexi gelassen habe, die Scheibe vor die Öffnung zu halten und die Öffnung anzuzeichnen. Mit dem Cuttermesser schneide ich die Folie entlang des Risses ein und ziehe den entstandenen Rand ab. Ich erhalte eine sauber abgeklebte Scheibe. Das Aufrauhen des Randes ist ein guter Vorschlag, jedoch ist es sehr gefährlich die Scheiben mit Lösungsmitteln zu bearbeiten. Es kann dazu führen, dass die Scheiben nach kurzer Zeit brüchig werden und ich den gleichen Job nebst Kosten nochmal durchführen muß. Die Dichtmasse wird satt aufgebracht. Danach kommt der wichtigste Teil der Arbeit. Die Scheibe sanft in das Bett aus Sika o. ä. drücken und vorsichtig fixieren, und zwar so, dass eine Schicht von min. 3 mm bleibt. Danach ist erstmal Feierabend. Ist die Masse durchgehärtet, kann ich die Schrauben fest anziehen. Das hat folgenden Grund: Wenn ich die Verschraubung der Fenster sofort vornehme, drücke ich das Sika bis auf eine Schichtstärke von unter einem Millimeter aus der Fuge und zerstöre die Abdichtung, die ich ja eigentlich erreichen wollte. Lasse ich aber ca. 3 mm Sika hart werden und "knalle" danach die Schrauben an, habe ich eine dauerhafte Abdichtung der Scheiben, die sich dem Aufbau anpasst. Habe ich einen abgerundeten Aufbau, muß ich eben kleine Klötze hinterlegen um die Schichtstärke zu erreichen.

  Meine Erfahrung war, das Sikaflex und Co. nicht lange hält. Der Grund scheint darin zu liegen, daß es zu "dünnflüssig" ist. Ein weiteres Indiz dafür war, dass das gleiche Produkt von "Würth" - noch dünnflüssiger - noch weniger lange gehalten hat. Ich hab´ mich dann an den Hersteller meines Schiffes (früher Jeantot, heute Alliaura) gewendet und die gefragt, wie die das machen, denn Plexy- bzw. Marelonscheiben sind ja eigentlich werftseitig erst einmal dicht. Dort habe ich dann erfahren, dass sie Scheibenkleber aus der Automobilindustrie verwenden, der allerdings offensichtlich ungern in kleineren Gebinden an Privat abgegeben wird. Autoscheibenkleber fand ich eigentlich ganz logisch, denn bei fast allen moderneren PKW sind die Scheiben nur noch geklebt und müssen ja nun etliches aushalten und trotzdem dicht bleiben. Dann hab´ ich recherchiert und folgende 2 Firmen gefunden (es gibt sicher noch mehr):
  www.emfi.com und www.dow.com (Anschriften etc. siehe Internet) Das Zeug der Firma "Emfi" heißt "Emfimastic" und das von "Dow-Automotive" heißt "Betaseal". Dazu gibt´s auch entsprechende Primer, der von Dow heißt "Betaprime".
  Beides ist eine schwarze Polyurethanmasse, aber offensichtlich als Kleber erheblich zähflüssiger formuliert, und damit auch anstrengender zu verarbeiten. (Ich habe selbst zwei Billig-Quetschpistolen beim Drücken den Griff verbogen(!), bevor ich mir endlich eine teure Quetsche geleistet habe.)
  Bei der Verarbeitung scheint mir folgendes wichtig zu sein:
  Zunächst einmal arbeite man an halbwegs kühlen Tagen, da dann die Scheibenzwischenräume wegen des umgebenden kalten Materials größer sind. Wird es später wärmer und die Fenster dehnen sich aus, können die Dichtungen Druck deutlich besser vertragen als Zug.
  Alte Dichtungsmasse aus allen Fugen mit Teppichmesser, Schraubenzieher und ähnlichen Utensilien komplett entfernen. Insbesondere die Ränder der Kunststoffscheiben mit 60er oder 80er Schmirgel gut anrauhen um eine großflächige, haftfähige Oberfläche zu erzielen. Jetzt das Ganze mit Azeton reinigen und gut Primern. Während der Primer richtig durchtrocknet, klebt man die Fugen mit einem minimalen Abstand am Fensterrand von etwa 1/2 bis 1 MM sauber mit gutem und etwas breiteren Malerklebeband ab. Je nach Tiefe, quetsche man dann das Dichtungsmittel in ein oder zwei Lagen in die Fuge, wichtig ist hierbei, daß man bei zwei Lagen "naß in naß" arbeitet, und die PUR-Masse keine Haut bildet. Man muß also, einmal begonnen, je nach Fläche zügig arbeiten. Ebenfalls bevor sich die erste Haut gebildet hat, zieht man die überstehende Masse mit einem billigen Plastikspachtel zügig plan ab. Danach ist es wichtig das Klebeband sofort zu entfernen, da es sonst mit der Masse eintrocknet und sich nicht mehr ohne einzureißen entfernen läßt. Anschließend sollte man der Versuchung widerstehen kleiner Unregelmäßigkeiten noch ausbessern zu wollen, man macht garantiert mehr kaputt als besser.
  Wenn die Fugendichtung nach ein paar Tagen wirklich durchgehärtet hat, und nicht nur oberflächlich(!) wie z.B. nach der ersten Nacht, kann man Unregelmäßigkeiten, Überstände oder Verschmierungen gut mit einer Rasierklinge oder einem scharfen Cuttermesser korrigieren bzw. entfernen ohne jetzt noch Schaden am "Gesamtkunstwerk" anzurichten.
  So eingedichtet sollten die Scheiben wieder einige Saisons dicht sein.

• I was constantly chasing leaking fixed windows (the bane of all boat owners), which were bolted at approx 60mm centres with sealant between.
  1. Windows expand & contract at a MUCH greater rate than the substrate to which they are attached.
  2. Bolts give an excellent access route for water from outside to inside. To solve 1. you need about 6mm thickness of sealant between window and substrate. less than 6mm thickness will not have sufficient compliance to allow for expansion & contraction so the sealer will tear and then leak. tTo achieve this attach windows with 6mm glazing tape end fill the gap with sealant. To solve 2. don't use any bolts. Glazing tape + sealer will be plenty strong enough to hold the windows on without bolts. If you must use bolts use way oversize holes (say 10mm holes for 3mm bolts) so that bolts do not impede expansion & contraction + plenty of sealer in the space around the bolt and don't tighten the bolts to reduce sealer thickness below 6mm Obviously this system will not allow you to use bolts to bend the window to fit to a curved surface so if you have to fit windows to a curved surface you will have to have the windows moulded or shaped to suit the curved surface, or put up with the leaks. • Use strong double sided tape which is about 2 mm thick from TASCO or 3M. This tape sticks like shi!!!! to a blanket, but allows for the expansion and contraction of the perspex. Then put structural ( non acetic cure) silicon around the edge. The silicon sealant should be the same width as the thickness of the acrylic. It is best if the window is rebated into the skin so it fits flush. This reduces the risk of water blasting the edge of the acrylic (perspex). Works fine here in Townsville with extremely high temperatures. The double sided tape is strong enough to hold the window with mild bends, but more severe curves will need to be moulded to the shape. Bolts are NOT needed are will just result in fractures, leaks and crazing due to local stress loads. Bruce Hodgens Townsville, Australia.
• IMO, the shortcomings of most windows is two-fold: 1) the bolts create stresspoints around which the window (assuming it isn't tempered glass) crazes. 2) Bolts give you the ability to crank the window down until the sealant is a micro-thin layer. This has little to no chance of doing its job as a gasket. I have had the best luck with the following: 1) Cut some 1/4" thick spacers of rubber or other squishy substance. Furniture bumpers work nicely. Make them small; a pure cube would be best. 2) If the windows are upset (as opposed to inset), tape a couple big bolts (or something to create a ledge for the window to sit on) to the hull. 3) tape around the window outline 4) Apply a thick layer of your chosen sealant, squish some of your spacers into the goo. I have had good luck with black silicone (GE silicone II, I believe) when using lexan. 5) squish the window into place. Your bumpers will create a gasket, the ledge will support the window until cured. Trim when cured. Silicone can take many days to cure at this thickness. I don't have a great suggestion for how to keep the inside a clean joint, though. It's always a struggle for me... Due to the widely differing rates of thermal expansion of a boat and lexan/plexiglass, you need this gasket to be thick enough to handle the dimensional changes. I put some 6" x 18" windows on the outside of my trimaran with this method. They have withstood a journey up the coast during this worse-than-usual winter with no problem. In fact, one was installed a few hours before leaving when we noticed problems with the existing window. It caused no trouble even thought he first part of the trip was the worst. YMMV -Rob
• This is a very common one.
  I don't have all the answers but have learn't a few lessons the hard way. Fixing the ones that didn't work
  1. Do not use rubber seals.
  2. If you must use bolts. drill oversize holes and use a spacer, those plastic inserts supplied for fitting anodised sail track work well.
  3. Pack the window out with spacers of dry sealant or put deep grooves in the substrate or both to get a good thickness of sealant. Lexan and the like have a high coefficeint of expansion. Need a good thickness of sealant to allow movement. 4mm may be allright in a hatch but more for larger windows.
  4. Sand any traces of gloss off the substrate and window on the sealing surface.
  5. Pick a dry day with low humidity.
  6. Don't fully tighten bolts until sealant is dry.
  7. Leave 5mm expansion space in wood frames if you recess the window.
  8. Don't move the boat or hammer near windows for a week.
  9. Pray.

• Have had experience with three systems for sealing fixed windows:
  1. Typical 5200 glue/screw systems from the 1980's When properly done the urethane glued windows will hold despite tremendous flexing and strain. It is not uncommon to see acrylic (plexiglass) windows crack before the bond fails. However! According to the manufacturer, and in accord with my own expense, the urethane adhesive is not forever. In 10 to 5 years depending on exposure to light, chemicals, heat, etc., the adhesive turns to a wax like substance and fails. The problem then is that the joint is partially good and partially deteriorated and very hard to disassemble for re bonding. Plan on replacing the glazing too. One alternative adhesive is the automotive two component adhesive developed for bonding glass into painted metal window frames. Available from windshield installers. May have to blacken the clear window over the glue joint to protect from U.V. and will probably not work on Lexan.
  2. Same as above but with Silicone adhesive After two cycles with 5200 I replaced my glazing with new acrylic and bonded and screwed the glazing with a 50 year clear silicone rubber adhesive. I did use a Dow primer, Dow 1204 Clear Adhesive Primer, on both the acrylic and the gelcoat surface. This has been in service for 5 years and shows no leaks or deterioration (one can see the glue line). This boat works a lot so it is a fair test. 3. Tempered glass in silicone On the family powerboat the tempered glass windows were a constant source of leaks. Ten years ago these glass windows were bonded into their wood frames with a 50 year silicone adhesive. The job is still as good as new despite significant working and the stress of the wood to glass daily expansion mismatch. A few details: a) The wood was "primed" with a mixture of epoxy and fumed silica and then the primed areas lightly sanded to expose the silica surface. Put in as much silica as possible. b) The silicone glue line was kept at least 3 mm. thick by use of spacer buttons made of cured silicone rubber. This insures a flexible seal line. c) The glass was then captured by an outer frame sealed as above to the glass and screwed in place. This glass in silicone system basically floats the glass in a gasket of flexible rubber but unlike a simple rubber seal the silicone aggressively and permanently bonds to the glass and silica rich epoxy. Very strong and the glass won't scratch but it is heavier than plastic and can be broken. TLam45387@aol.com

  Sika primer - apparently quite essential. Black UV masking to affix to the outside of the window to prevent UV decay of the joint through the plastic. The installation instructions follow the advice given here basically seating the window on rubber blocks to prevent the mastic getting squeezed too thin during installation. It does not mention using double sided tape but then Sika do not sell double sided tape :-) I would recommend getting hold of a copy of Sika's application booklet which is generally really useful. I thought I had read it online but a quick search failed to find it. Gary Pearce
